BRING THE H.E.A.T.

Transforming Public Safety and Empowering Communities

LIVEFREE CA’s H.E.A.T campaign is an organized intervention that seeks to protect the basic health, safety, and well-being of all people by demanding immediate and comprehensive changes to the current policing system in California. This system disproportionately threatens the safety of Black people and other marginalized groups. Minor reforms are no longer enough; we must dismantle the existing system of policing and mass incarceration and replace it with a new public safety system centered around community-led initiatives.

Our H.E.A.T. Framework targets four key areas to bring about transformative change:

  • HIRING

    Reforming hiring practices, emphasizing the recruitment of officers living in the communities they police removing armed police officers from educational institutions, and implementing a three-strike rule for officer misconduct.

  • EQUIPMENT

    Demilitarizing the police by liquidating military equipment, prohibiting the use of federal funds for purchasing military equipment, restricting SWAT team use, and implementing responsible body camera policies.

  • ACCOUNTABILITY

    Establishing a national public database of officers fired or resigned due to misconduct, instituting national standards for deadly force, enacting civilian oversight boards, and removing state police bill of rights laws that protect officers from accountability.

  • TRAINING

    Providing comprehensive academy and ongoing annual trainings in anti-racism, implicit bias, procedural justice, de-escalation, conflict resolution, officer mindfulness, mental health, self-care, and strategies for responding to differently-abled individuals and mental health crises.

By advocating for these essential changes, LIVEFREE Ca aims to create a new, community-based public safety system that is more equitable, just, and effective in protecting all members of society.
